Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the "Venice of the North". The Westerkerk ("western church") is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal.

Here's a view of the Westertoren in the winter -5 ºC december 2008, Jordaan - Amsterdam

it was a cloudy and gloomy day all day and i was so bored so we decided to stop by at camden, nj. one hour into sunset and lo and behold, the sun started peeping out so we got clear skies, some fog, calm waters, and no haze - essentially the perfect conditions. little did we know that the ben franklin bridge was also quietly celebrating christmas with her own beautiful lights!

happy new year to all of you my flickr friends! :)

Thank you for 1000 views! In less than a week (well 5 hours under a full week), my photostream has received its first 1000 views! I am amazed by this because my photos are not even showing in flickr searches yet. I know that it is only by the continued care of my flickr friends and the wonderful interest of my new flickr contacts that 1000 views during opening week is possible.

Thank you all!

About this photo:

In honor of receiving 1000 photostream views, I am uploading this old (outdated) photo. This image is my very first HDR. I have not reprocessed this photo since the first time (circa 2006); I am leaving it in this form as a sort of memorial.

If I remember correctly, this HDR is made of 3 exposures. I used Photomatix to process the image and set the strength at 75 and the saturation around 60. The luminosity was set at -5. These were the settings I used for a very long time, before I learned more about adjusting the shadows and highlights in HDR images.

Although I wince to say it, this photo was taken with a 2.0 megapixel camera. At the time, I was taking photos for my own use in graphic design and web development. Now, I have more experience with HDR and better cameras, but--call it nostalgia if you want--I still like this photo.

About the Location:

This lighthouse is the crowning jewel of the harbor of Chania. Restored in 2006, the lighthouse marks the entrance to the sheltered harbor and marina. The town of Chania is located in Northwestern Crete and is a town of a rich and varied history. The harbor town boasts architecture from modern Greece, Venetian architecture, Turkish buildings and even some old ruins. Recently, a Minoan settlement has been uncovered not far from the harbor.

Don't forget to look at the other photo I uploaded today. Thanks!

Who ever will come to the business of Käthe Wohlfahrt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany, Bavaria) during the summer might feel strange. The shop is a huge Christmas village and offers Christmas and Advent items all the year. The warm light inside is amazing and it will touch you. You may feel like a child on Christmas Eve who is waiting for his present ;-). The half-timbered houses with the Christmas tree in the middle are really lovely. You shouldn't miss this beautiful village and visit it in the Winter as well as in the Summer.

For the moment this photo will be my last one of the series from Rothenburg o.d. Tauber.

London (pronounced /ˈlʌndən/) is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. It has been a major settlement for two millennia, and its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, when it was named Londinium. London's core, the ancient City of London, the 'square mile', retains its medieval boundaries. Since at least the nineteenth century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis developed around it. Today, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly.

London is a major global city and one of the world's largest financial centres. Central London is home to the headquarters of more than half of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. London's influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position. It is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. London hosted the 1908 and 1948 Summer Olympics and will host the 2012 Summer Olympics.

London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church.

London has a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. In July 2007, it had an official population of 7,556,900 within the boundaries of Greater London, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union. The Greater London Urban Area (the second largest in the EU) has a population of 8,278,251. while the metropolitan area (the largest in the EU) has an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. The public transport network, administered by Transport for London, is the most extensive in the world, London Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers and the airspace is the busiest of any urban centre in the world.

I'm pretty lazy today, I didn't feel like removing the ghosting from the car.

The Pak Ou Caves in Laos are a magnificent group of caves that are only accessible by boat, about two hours upstream from the center of Luang Prabang. The caves are noted for their impressive Lao style Buddha sculptures assembled over the centuries by local people and pilgrims. Hundreds of mostly wooden Buddhist figures are laid out over the floors and wall. They take many different positions, including meditation, teaching, peace, rain, and reclining (nirvana).

When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

And in my hour of darkness

She is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people

Living in the world agree,

There will be an answer, let it be.

For though they may be parted there is

Still a chance that they will see

There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be. Yeah

There will be an answer, let it be.

... Love is the only air I’ve ever breathed

and laughter the only language in the world that I understand

I have just dropped by on this earth, to give you a wink.

To leave something behind

like a fluttering trace.

Therefore, don’t be sad.

The only thing I care for is

to remain silly in your eyes and strangely dear to your heart.

At night, when you look up to the sky,

you give me a wink too

let it be a secret.

In spite of gray days,

when you see a comet turning the horizon red,

remember: its me

still silly flying and living.

... Ljubav je jedini vazduh

koji sam udisao.

I osmeh jedini jezik

koji na svetu razumem.

Na ovu zemlju sam svratio

da ti namignem malo.

Da za mnom ostane nešto

kao lepršav trag.

Nemoj da budes tužan.

Toliko mi je stalo

da ostanem u tebi

budalast,

čudno drag.

Noću kad gledaš u nebo,

i ti namigni meni.

To neka bude tajna.

Uprkos danima sivim,

kad vidiš neku kometu

da vidik zarumeni,

upamti: to ja još uvek

šašav letim i živim.

Non-HDR shot taken a few nights ago after work. This is looking towards Tokyo Station on my way to the pool from the office.

So much nicer/modern looking now with the high rises dotted around the station. 18 years ago when I first started working here, most/all buildings were restricted to 10 floors or so around the Station.

The evening of December 5th, 2008 produced perhaps the most spectacular sunset Seattle has ever seen. A heavy onshore flow produced multiple stacks of lenticular clouds over all of the big Cascade Volcanoes from Rainier at least as far south as Mount Hood (maybe over Glacier Peak too, but I couldn't see it). As the sun set, the sky exploded in the most vivid reds and pinks I have ever personally witnessed. The color you see in this image has not been manipulated at all, there has been no boost in the saturation or hues and there has been no adjustment of the white balance of the image. This is really what it looked like that evening.

The picture itself is a composite of two frames taken about half an hour apart. One exposure for the incredible color in the sky, and another to capture the buildings with the lights on in a dark enough setting that they would stand out against the background. Processed independently in Lightroom, merged in Photoshop.

In the Sapa region there are about 35,000 Black Hmong residing in the surrounding 17 villages and they account for about 50% of the area population. Most reside at an altitude of 1,600 – 1,700 meters above sea level in this stunningly beautiful region they call “the city above the clouds”. The Hmong started migrating to Vietnam from China in the last 300 years.

London (pronunciation (help·info); IPA: /ˈlʌndən/) is the capital and largest urban area of both England and the United Kingdom. An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its foundation, London has been part of many movements and phenomena throughout history, including the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. The city's core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries; but since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the whole metropolis that has developed around it. Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly.

The public transport network, administered by Transport for London, is one of the most extensive in the world, and Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the world for international traffic.

The surrounding East London area saw much of London's early industrial development; now, brownfield sites throughout the area are being redeveloped as part of the Thames Gateway including the London Riverside and Lower Lea Valley, which is being developed into the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics.

London has hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1908 and 1948. In July 2005 London was chosen to host the Games in 2012, which will make it the first city in the world to host the Summer Olympics three times.

A series of coordinated bomb attacks were carried out by Islamic extremist suicide bombers on the public transport network on 7 July 2005—just 24 hours after London was awarded the 2012 Summer Olympics.
