Great Grey Owl. This large owl of the upper northern hemisphere is a perfect example of a raptor that primarily uses hearing to find prey. The huge facial disc on the great grey owl gathers sound like a giant ear, enabling them to hear the scratching and scurrying of lemmings under fallen snow.
Clouds obscure the sun as it sets on the Gulf of Mexico somewhere north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The Alter Hof is a 12th century castle that served as residence of the dukes of Bavaria and was also the permanent residence of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor (Ludwig der Bayer).

This royal Renaissance castle was founded in 1549 by Gustav I (or Gustav Vasa as he is generally called in Sweden), but not finished until the early 17th century.
It was interesting to see this small river starting to freeze. Later in the season if we ski in here this will be covered over with snow.

Die anhaltende Kälte im Januar 2017 lässt den Main zufrieren. Hier ein Blick von der Alten Mainbrücke in Würzburg über den Fluss zur Festung Marienberg. Nur noch kleine Bereiche im Bereich des Wasserkraftwerks sind wegen der starken Wasserströmung dort eisfrei.
The persistent cold in January 2017 causes the river Main to freeze. Here a view from the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Bridge) in Würzburg over the river to the fortress Marienberg. Only small areas in the zone of the hydroelectric power plant are free of ice due to the strong water flow.

Eines meiner älteren Fotos. Das ist meine Nichte Corinna auf dem Bogener Berg im Landkreis Straubing. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war sie gerade mal fünf Jahre alt. Mittlerweile ist sie vierzehn und es fehlt nur noch ein Centimeter und sie ist so gross wie ich. Wie die Zeit vergeht. :-)
One of my older photos. This is my niece Corinna on the Bogener Berg district of Straubing. At this time, she was just five years old. She is now fourteen and it is pending only a centimeter and she is as big as me. How the time flies. :-)

Die Heilig-Blut-Basilika in Brügge ist das älteste Gebäude am architektonisch bedeutendsten Platz von Brügge, der in unmittelbarer Nähe des Marktes gelegenen Burg.
Die Doppelkirche besteht aus der Basiliuskapelle als Unterkirche und einer Oberkirche.
Der Sakralbau ist Aufbewahrungsort einer der bedeutendsten Reliquien Europas – einer Ampulle mit dem Blut Christi.[1] Seit 1923 hat sie den Rang einer Basilica minor.
Die Ampulle mit dem Blut Christi wird In einem silbernen Reliquienschrein (von 1661) aufbewahrt.
Der aus Brügge stammende Graf und Kreuzritter Dietrich von Elsass soll diese Reliquie für tapfere Taten während des Zweiten Kreuzzuges in Jerusalem erhalten haben.
Die Reliquie wird seit 1291 immer zu Christi Himmelfahrt während der Heilig-Blut-Prozession durch die Stadt getragen. Die Heilig-Blut-Prozession wurde 2009 in die Repräsentative Liste des immateriellen Kulturerbes der Menschheit aufgenommen.
I don't often use a DX lens with my full-frame camera but I wanted the reach that my Nikon 200mm DX gave me to get this tree, situated well into Loch Eck, nicely framed..

I've kayaked out to this tree a few times and got out ... standing in the middle of the loch is a weird experience :)
The capture of a flaring ray sunset from Veterans Bridge. I was actually jogging on Market Street Bridge (behind Walnut in the foreground) and saw how the sun's rays were flaring this particular evening....so I sprinted the mile (or so) to catch it setting from said vantage point....JUST made it!

A sculpture of 15 wild horses has crowned a barren Central Washington hillside for more nearly two decades, but the rusted sheets of steel still are an inspiring sight to travelers along busy I- 90.
The 200-foot line of life-size charging horses, the creation of David Govedare of Chewelah, Wash., captures a mystical spirit from a time when real wild horses roamed the steppes.
Titled "Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies," the scene symbolically re-creates the Great Spirit turning loose a herd of wild horses above the Columbia River's Wanapum Lake.
