I try to stop my heart from missing you,

but that window

appears to be nailed wide open.

Sometimes leaving is the best act of love and care you can give. Otherwise staying would build up hate that will destroy the both of you.

Living in the present and being mindful of life's moments is beneficial...but longing for flowers and bees in the middle of winter is human.

So far away

Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore

It would be so fine to see your face at my door

Doesn't help to know you're just time away

Long ago I reached for you and there you stood

Holding you again could only do me good

Oh, how I wish I could

But you're so far away

One more song about moving along the highway

Can't say much of anything that's new

If I could only work this life out my way

I'd rather spend it being close to you

But you're so far away

Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore

It would be so fine to see your face at my door

Doesn't help to know you're so far away

Yeah, you're so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely

Nothing else to do but close my mind

I sure hope the road don't come to own me

There's so many dreams I've yet to find

But you're so far away

Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore

It would be so fine to see your face at my door

And it doesn't help to know you're so far away

Yeah, you're so far away

Hey, you're so far away

You're always on my mind, (day and night) day and night

When I think of you boy, everything feels so right

Well I often think of the happy times we spent together

And I just can't wait to tell you that I love you

Time keeps passing by, (you're not here) you're not here

I feel so all alone when I don't have you near

But I often think of the happy times we spent together

And I just can't wait (just can't wait) to tell you that I love you

I'm missing my baby, (missing my baby) missing my baby

I gotta hold you tight, and never let you out of my sight

Missing my baby, (missing my baby) missing my baby

I gotta feel your heart beat (your heart beat) next to mine

Gotta feel it

Chapter Eight ...... Home Before Midnight

The wind swept across the top of the Clock Tower, Clouds drifted beneath the balcony, Silver fragments of the missing hour circled overhead like glowing birds,

and standing before Amelia was a woman wearing the same pendant.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Captain Marmalade looked from one woman to the other.

Then back again, Then once more Finally he sighed.

"Well."

Amelia didn't take her eyes off the stranger, "Well what?"

The cat adjusted his hat, "This has become considerably more mysterious."

The woman smiled, "I was wondering when you would arrive."

Her voice was calm, Friendly even, That somehow made Amelia more cautious.

"You know me?"

The woman nodded, "I know who you are."

Amelia's hand instinctively touched her pendant, The stranger noticed,

Her smile widened, "You wear it well."

Captain Marmalade stepped forward, "Would anyone care to explain what's happening?"

"No," said both women at the same time.

The cat sat down heavily, "I feared that might be the answer."

The Golden Gear floated gently above the stranger's hands,

Golden light spilled across the balcony, Amelia could feel its power,

Its warmth, Its rhythm, almost like a heartbeat, "You stole it," Amelia said.

The woman shook her head, "No."

"Mrs. Whistle said—"

"I borrowed it."

Captain Marmalade snorted, "That is absolutely stealing."

The woman laughed, "Perhaps."

Amelia folded her arms, "Why?"

The stranger looked toward the frozen clock face,

Her expression softened, "Because the Market Clock was hiding something."

The answer surprised Amelia, "What?"

The woman hesitated,

Then she looked directly into Amelia's pale grey eyes, "The truth."

Thunder rumbled in the distance., The silver fragments swirled faster around the tower, Captain Marmalade looked nervous.

"Whenever people start talking about truth, things become complicated."

Neither woman disagreed, the stranger carefully held out the Golden Gear.

"Take it."

Amelia blinked, "Just like that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The woman smiled sadly, "Because it was never meant for me."

The golden light reflected in her eyes , for the briefest moment, Amelia felt as though she recognized her, Not her face, Not her voice, Something deeper,

something familiar, The feeling vanished before she could understand it.

Slowly, Amelia reached out, The moment her fingers touched the Golden Gear, the world seemed to stop, The clouds froze, The wind vanished,

Even the silver fragments became still, A vision flashed before her eyes,

She saw her father standing beside the ancient clock in the workshop,

Younger, Smiling, Beside him stood a woman with long blonde hair.

A woman whose pale grey eyes matched her own, Amelia caught her breath

Her mother, The image lasted only seconds, Then it disappeared,

The world rushed back, The wind returned, The clouds moved once more,

and Amelia found herself holding the Golden Gear, Tears stung her eyes.

The stranger noticed, "You saw them."

Amelia nodded, "My parents."

The woman smiled, "Then the clock is finally waking up."

A deep rumble echoed through the tower, The Market Clock had begun moving,

Only slightly, but enough. One gear turned, then another, then another,

The entire tower trembled.

Captain Marmalade's ears perked up, "That sounds promising."

A brilliant golden light erupted from the centre of the clock.

The missing hour responded immediately, Silver fragments rushed through the sky.

Thousands of memories spiralling toward the tower.

Laughter, Music, Conversations, Moments, All returning home.

The missing hour was coming back. Amelia approached the centre mechanism.

An empty space waited among the gears, the exact shape of the Golden Gear.

She understood immediately, This was where it belonged, the clock had been waiting,

The market had been waiting, Perhaps even she had been waiting.

Carefully, she slid the Golden Gear into place, For one heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then ......................... TICK.

A single sound echoed through the tower.............. TICK.

Another, The giant hands began moving, Golden gears spun, Silver light flooded the sky.

Below, cheers erupted across the Floating Market, The clock was alive again,

The missing hour had returned, Time was flowing, The city was saved.

Captain Marmalade let out a long sigh of relief, "We're alive."

"Yes."

"The market is safe."

"Yes."

"The cinnamon buns are safe."

Amelia laughed, "Yes, Captain."

The cat wiped an imaginary tear from his eye, "A glorious day."

As the celebrations began below, the mysterious woman stepped backward. toward the shadows of the tower,

Amelia noticed immediately, "Wait."

The woman paused.

"Will I see you again?"

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the stranger smiled, "I think this is only the beginning."

She touched her pendant, a doorway of silver light opened behind her.

Before stepping through, she added, "Tell the clock I said hello."

Then she vanished, The doorway disappeared, Leaving only silence,

And questions, Far too many questions.

As the sun began setting over the Floating Market, Amelia and Captain Marmalade stood in the square below.

The city was alive once more, Music filled the air, Children laughed.

Balloons drifted across the sky, Everything felt right again.

The cat looked at Amelia "You'll be going home soon."

She nodded, "I think so."

Captain Marmalade smiled, "Good."

Amelia looked surprised, "Good?"

The cat's tail flicked,

"If you stayed here permanently, who would have adventures in all the other worlds?"

Amelia laughed, The cat had a point.

And somehow she suspected this was only the first of many journeys.

That evening, as the sky turned gold and pink, Amelia returned to the ancient clock.

The hidden door stood waiting, Warm light spilling from within.

She looked back one final time, At the Floating Market.

At the clouds, At Captain Marmalade.

The cat tipped his tiny captain's hat, "Until next time, Clockmaker."

Amelia smiled, Then she stepped through the door.

And the clock carried her home.
