As is customary in the early dark of the night, the river flowed rhythmically under the Bridge lulling the babies to sleep. It would be a short sleep for the Canterbury Tails babies, because it was only right that the youngest tails share in the festivities of this special night. Everything had to be perfect…Hope was in charge…she knew how it had to be.
Night greetings are not the norm for canines with families…night greetings are reserved for those who otherwise won’t find their way. Hope remembers her own night journey and wants everything perfect—and easy—for her grandson. White Christmas lights were uniformly wrapped around the trunks of the trees and fireflies danced in the shadows, making hydrangea flowers (one of his favorites) seem like mounds of snow…
“He loves Christmas! During the holiday nights he would stay up with Margie until the last of the Christmas lights were unplugged. Sometimes she opened the patio door to let the fresh air in…it made the scent of the pine needles perfume the room. He loved running through the pine trees in front of the house; he and Margie played hide-and-seek in the trees.” Ripley remembered waiting--those nights on Christmases past--for them to come to bed; she knew that if she got comfortable on the bed, he would jump up and make her move.”
Polo laughed, “The kid took my spot! I remember putting my front paws across her midriff and putting my head on her heart, and…”
Hope burst in, “And she wrapped her left arm across my body cradling me close to her. I fell asleep to the beat of her heart…”
Carrying a mother-of-pearl pail of phosphorescent dust, Nora scampered toward the two. “I need some help here! There is so much to do and so little time…we never get enough time for greetings…We don’t want to lose the first stars of the night.”
Joining the trio, Bishop said, “Relax, Princess! Memories are what keep us going sometimes.”
“Bishop, I know all about the memories, but his case is taking too long already.”
With the television remote in his mouth and rawhide tucked under his front leg, Luke (rather uncomfortably) stated, “I have searched the collections and haven’t found anything that he would like.”
Polo stepped in, “He didn’t have anything special—only her, and she won’t be here. I didn’t have anything either—just her. Whatever she wanted to play was the right thing to play.”
Hope added, “It was just about playing together. But wait….I think I have the right thing…”
“I beat you to it! Here they are. Where should I put them?”
“Thank you, Paige.” Hope was grateful that Paige brought them and carefully placed them in the #1, #2, and #3 position. “Wait! Put the tattered glove in the #2 position.” Hope sniffed the objects lightly at first, then double-backed to breathe in the scent again. “Polo, where did you get these? They smell authentic.”
“They ARE authentic. Last visit I brought them back with me. Margie’s been looking for them for months! Heehee…heehee…Even Donna has been looking for these gloves! They belonged to me first, Miss Hope!” Polo’s smugness charged a reaction from her…
“But you never got to use them, and I did! And he got his UD with them.”
“Heeheehee….and then I took them! I had a hunch we would need them here someday.”
With her ears dusting the rose petals along the walk, the first of the Tails spoke; Elsa remembered Hope’s night greeting, “Greetings are happy times for us; greetings bring gifts of fresh scents to renew our spirits. He will bring good gifts.” “It will be soon. Let’s gather the young ones.”
The Tails moved to the window in the clouds. Bishop craned his neck, “Look! She is cradling him now. She is remembering that day when Gretl sat in the whelping box and held him up to her…she said how much he looked like you, Polo.”
Polo added, “And for a moment I was with her through that pup. That boy…He learned fast…And he performed the exercises no matter who asked him! There was only one thing he did just for her…”
Nora interrupted, “When Margie asked, Where’s my boy? He would leave a platter of filet mignon with a side order of fresh green beans and RUN to her!”
Hope added, “He earned his Champion at 16 months and his UD in only 6 trials…with MY help, of course! His CD and CDX were easy—he qualified each time out! He has a Versatility leg and two RE legs…Margie was convinced he’d finish both titles over the next three weeks. The titles didn’t matter though; showing was just something for them to do together.”
Ripley, quietly watching through the window, turned to face the others. “He’s coming.”
The Bridge was adorned with stars to help him find the way…the Tails and friends took their places, the youngest in the front rows. Paige put the pail of phosphorescent dust in the flyball unit locking the pail handle in place. Luke ran forward, touched the pedal and released the dust into the night sky spiraling it into a ribbon of welcome for the traveler.
Margie kissed his muzzle and whispered, “Go now…I will always love you…I will carry you in my heart forever until I see you again. I will never forget you. Tell the others I still love them. I love you Simon.”
He looked up but couldn’t see her anymore. Following the sparkles and stars to the Bridge, Simon turned to look back...
Ripley, anxious for his arrival, excitedly said, “Welcome, son…this is home now…until they come.”
With our dogs, life is experienced completely and unselfishly…even weeds in the grass deserve attention. They appreciate the briskness of winter air, warmth of summer’s heat, and everything in between! How wonderful for us to share the world with them!
