Helping the Doughboys
A fascinating old postcard, mailed from Hempstead, New York to Georgetown, Massachusetts on November 1, 1918 by Private Fabian K. Cox, just ten days before the end of the war. Pvt. Cox was in the U.S. Army's Aviation Corps, stationed at Field #2 in Garden City, Long Island. The field was later re-named Mitchel Field, and later Mitchel Air Force Base. Closed in 1961, the multi-purpose site is now home to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nassau Coliseum and Hofstra University. The card does not say where this K of C facility was located.
This card was received on November 12, a day after the Armistice was sigend. Postage in those days was only 2 cents.
The Knights of Columbus (K of C), the Catholic Men's fraternal organization, was one of many American fraternal, veterans and civic groups that provided social, recreational and other support to our troops during the First World War. April 6th marked the anniversary of America's entry into the war in 1917. For more information on the Knights, visit www.kofc.org.
