Stranger #15 - Chile
This is Chile (pronounced chil-LAY) and I hope I spelled her name right. She was visiting Wisconsin for a youth conference and she is from the Bahamas. This is the daughter of Georgina (stranger #14) and of the two, Chile was the talker. She did quite well sharing her opinions on practically every subject we discussed.
Based on her sophisticated conversation, one would never guess that she has just completed her first year of college. She is majoring in foreign languages and her goal is to be able to speak seven languages fluently -- including Spanish, Italian, German, Cantonese and I cannot remember the other three. We spoke in Spanish for a minute or two but ended up laughing together because I think we needed a little help.
She has an 11-year-old brother and this was his first time coming into the United States. She seemed protective of him and wanted to make sure he was having a good time.
Like me, Chile likes to wear her hat backwards -- it shows off the name of her country. She also stood in front of the Bahamian flag but it is not too visible here.
She is also very expressive. When I took the first photo, I could tell she was not relaxed. So I started asking questions and as she focused on the answers she began to relax. When I looked over the photos and saw her various expressions, I decided to put them together to recapture what I saw and experienced behind the lens. These photos seem to capture the true nature of Chile.
This picture is #15 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/
