Australian Overland Telegraph Line 30/365
This is a shot of the Australian Overland Telegraph Line at the rail crossing on Angle Vale Rd In Virginia Facing north, "The 3178 kilometre line was built in less than two years and joined on 22 August 1872. It linked Australia to an undersea cable from Indonesia that came ashore at Port Darwin and made communication between Australia and the rest of the world possible in hours rather than weeks."[1].
These telegraph pilons you see here were most probably installed back in the 1920-1940's to replace the wooden ones. This telegraph line was used into the 1970's to talk across Australia, it stopped talking internationally during World War 2's bombing on Darwin. These days it just sits there rusting away, and falling apart.
This is for @dailyshoot s assignment #ds440 Make a photograph that illustrates an aspect of communication. Australia may not be what it is today if it weren't for this amazing engineering undertaking, Slowly and surely the poles disappear as rails get widened new roads get put in and people steal them to sell at the scrap yard. Most people dont even realise what this did and where it went. I really like the shot, the rail line and the telegraph line slowly fading into the distance.
