Charlie Bone and the Shadow by Jenny Nimmo

After finishing off the Harry Potter books, I was looking for something similar and someone recommended the Charlie Bone books. This is the 7th and most recent one released. They're a pretty good series. I saw someone describe them as "Harry Potter lite" and I think that's a fairly good description. In the books, a boy named Charlie Bone finds out he's descended from a king with magical powers. Charlie's inherited the power of hearing the voices of people in photos & paintings. He's sent to a school where other magically "endowed" children go and (a la Harry Potter) naturally gets into dangerous situations. They're not as dark as Harry Potter and don't take themselves as seriously as Harry Potter or the Dark is Rising seria. They're a pretty fast read but enjoyable, which is nice sometimes when I just want something light to take my mind off life. Or if I'm reading something heavier or more emotional, I'll switch to a light-hearted book as a distraction of sorts.
