Red Tail Visit

by tteerriitt (Terri Turner)

I walked with angels,
this morning,
in the pouring rain,
as tears of regret at the greed of humanity,
forcing these mighty birds,
to the edge of starvation,
finally extinction.

Stressed from homelessness,
stressed from dwindling food supplies,
pushed out to remnants,
removal of all old growth forests,
once abundance home land,
thousands and thousands of years,
nearly all cleared now.

Adapt to human greed and desires or die,
pushed out,
ignored by the passing throngs,
now competing,
for the same limited space,
using the park for their needs,
focused in on their own pains and sufferings.

Up to 30 years ago,
they still flue in mighty flocks,
surrounded by their entire family,
population covering the skies above,
casting shadows over all that lay below,
their screeching calls,
signaling the seasons change,
signal cycles moving on,
happened for past eternities,
in this land abounding.

5 birds left in this small flock,
sitting in trees too young,
hollow logs needed,
for their nest building needs,
trees too young to carry enough mature food,
shy birds forced to keep on the move,
around the park,
attain some corner of peace,
some space without humans,
or pampered dogs.
or domestic cats,
night prowlings..
