BEAR ATTACK
Lynda and I came upon a once in a life time scene while out for a drive on Thursday. WARNING THE VIDEOS & PHOTOGRAPHS ARE VERY GRAPHIC. Because of extenuating circumstances some of the Video Footage is very rough but you can get the Idea. While on a secondary highway I noticed what I thought was a Black Bear wrestling with a cub in the tall grass on a large field. I stopped and backed the truck up to where I could see better. It was a large Black Bear but it wasn't playful activity. It had a calf in its mouth that it was dragging towards the Tree line. Before I could get my camera activated a large Bull from the main herd of cattle came charging to the rescue of the Calf. Forcing the Bear to let go of it and retreat. The Bull made a second charge at the bear which I was able to capture in a very rough clip. There is a lot of poor shots because of the distance and I was totally unprepared for the scene that unfolded as it happened very quickly. The Bull stayed with the Calf and the Bear Stocked and Circled the two for over 20 minutes. The Bull charged the Bear once more in an attempt to frighten it off. We knew who the Calf and Cattle belonged to and made a run for the farm as we didn't have their phone # (we have it now) to sound the alarm. We met him on the way as he was in the process of Haying. He went to get his truck and we circled back to the scene where the Bull and the herd had abandoned the calf in the middle of the field but the Bear had not returned yet and the Calf had Collapsed in the tall grass from its wounds. Shortly after the armed farmer showed up walked the tree line looking for the Bear who had totally disappeared then tended to the Badly injured Calf. The prognosis for the calf was not good at this time the mauling was severe. The last picture shows just some of the puncture wounds in it's hind quarters and stomach the Calf sustained.
UPDATE !
Update on Bear attack on calf 2 weeks ago. Finally talked to farmer on the weekend and got an update. As with many farms of this size the animals in the herd are registered with #'s but also Brent & his family give the herd names to help in managing. (just like human's you're given a Social Ins # @ birth now and your parents give you a name(most times) to manage you). The Calf's name is Gabriella , the Bulls name is Rootbeer, the farmers name is Brent and the Bear's name is Mud. Gabriella survived after some doctoring but will have to change her career because of the injuries ; Rootbeer got an extra serving of Alfalfa for his couragous protection of Gabrella ; Brent gets to fight with the Govn't for the Farm Insurance Program "Damages to Domestic Animals by Wolf Bear and other preditors". The bear can't get at the Herd as there is 2 Electric Fences (used for herd control in grazing pastures)now in its way. But Mud still tries as a video later of him on Saturday trying to get at the herd again in almost the exact same place he brought down the calf. He has tried several times to go through the fence and got the jolt of his life on one occassion he crapped his pants right on the fence. Lets hope he learns his lesson and moves on. Farmer Brent lost 3 Calves that summer to Bear attacks. Life goes on.
