Sant’Elia is a small fraction of the municipality of Santa Flavia, in the province of Palermo.
The inhabited center, founded around the seventeenth century, located largely on a promontory overlooking the sea, was initially born as a fishing village dependent on an ancient trap.

Going through some older Flickr posts and decided to bring this one forward. I think it's my most favourite flower shot. Pin Cushion Protea .... I bought these from a flower stand outside a home on the slopes of Mount Haleakala, Maui.
Allium ursinum
The Latin specific name ursinum translates to 'bear' and refers to the supposed brown bear's taste for the bulbs; folk tales describe the bears consuming them after awakening from hibernation.

Burchell’s Coucal (Whitebrowned Coucal) is so beautiful, shy and yet such a beast when it comes to it’s eating habits.
This bird has a chestnut-brown back and similar wing feathers, a long tail with marked bands in its upper parts. They eat any prey smaller than itself (size ± 40 cm long & ±180 grams). It has a particular liking for young nestlings and the eggs of other birds. It will seek out and eat off the nest whatever it can find, and for this reason I call it a beast.

His name was Frank, he still had feelings so Frank danced, and enchanted everyone when he took the beautiful and unknown young woman to dance. Everyone fell silent in that large room, while Frank, the retired military man, who whirled in a poetic cadence, provoking sighs and pure enchantment around the four corners of the hall. And not just from the hall where he danced, but from all the movie theaters where that magnificent moment was immortalized.
Well Frank, whatever your name is, throw away that stupid weapon you carry in your heart. Let's all dance for peace. Open your eyes, Frank. Let's dance that amazing dream.

This melodic warbler is widely distributed across Britain & Ireland through the breeding season, and increasingly in winter too.
Blackcap breeding numbers have steadily increased in the UK since the late-1970s, and have also expanded their breeding range throughout northern Scotland and the island of Ireland during this time. They are now absent only on the highest Scottish peaks and farthest flung islands. In autumn, these breeding birds depart for southern Europe and are replaced by Blackcaps from central Europe. BTO research has helped show how garden bird feeding led to the evolution of this new migratory route and wintering strategy. Although widespread in winter, Blackcaps tend to be absent from the uplands at this time of year.
Blackcaps have a greyish overall appearance. The eponymous black cap is only found in the males; females and juveniles have a brown cap instead. The song is very similar to that of the Garden Warbler, but can be distinguished with practice. Blackcaps are found in parks, deciduous woodland and scrub, as well as at garden feeding stations.

Rock formations called Murphy's Haystacks.
These unusual rock formations aquired their
name from a Scottish agricultural expert who
advocated that to produce good hay farmers
should harrow their land for the best results.
While travelling with the coach he noticed
the rock formations in the distance and
informed the coach driver and passengers that
this farmer harrowed his land to produce so
much hay and fodder.
Being located on Murphy's property they
became known as Murphy's Haystacks.
From then on passing coachmen described
them as haystacks to their passengers.
However the Haystacks that are described are
technically inselbergs ( a hill that looks like
a rocky island rising sharply from the sea ).

The Stellar's Jays (Cyanocitta stelleri) have been rather scarce over the last few weeks. I suppose with the hot weather they were up north.
This immature bird paid us a visit yesterday. I was happy to see it!
Belinda's Dream Rose is meant to grow well in the Texas heat, so, once again I'm trying to grow roses! Have had little success with past attempts, but my neighbors seem to do well with them, so, fingers crossed...

Anna’s Hummingbirds are mostly green and gray, without any rufous or orange marks on the body. The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray without direct sunlight.
Anna’s Hummingbirds are a blur of motion as they hover before flowers looking for nectar and insects. Listen for the male's scratchy metallic song and look for him perched above head level in trees and shrubs.
Anna’s Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.

Kumlein's Gull - Larus glaucoides kumlien

Kumlien's gull (Larus glaucoides kumlieni) is a subspecies of the Iceland gull. It is a large gull which breeds in the Arctic regions of Canada. It is migratory, wintering from Labrador south to New England and west across the Great Lakes. The subspecies is named after the Swedish-American naturalist Thure Kumlien. It is a regular vagrant in small numbers to Britain and Ireland.
It has variably been considered a full species, a subspecies of Thayer's gull, a subspecies of Iceland gull, and a hybrid between the aforementioned species, all of which are considered subspecies of the Iceland gull as of 2017.
This taxon breeds colonially or singly on coasts and cliffs, making a nest lined with grass, moss or seaweed on the ground or cliff. Normally, two or three light brown eggs are laid.
The taxon is pale in all plumage, with a remarkably variable amount of pigment in the primaries. Individuals range from completely white-winged (indistinguishable from nominate L. glaucoides Iceland gull) to so dark in the wings as to be indistinguishable from Thayer's gull. Eye color is also variable, from pale yellow to dark brown. Such remarkable variation seems to lend credence to the belief that Kumlien's gull is in fact a hybrid swarm.
Kumlien's gulls average smaller overall and much smaller-billed than the very large glaucous gull and are usually smaller than herring gull. The taxon reaches adult plumage in four to five years. The call is a "laughing" cry like the herring gull's, but higher pitched.

These are omnivores like most Larus gulls, and they scavenge an seek suitable small prey. These birds forage while flying, picking up food at or just below the water's surface, and feed while walking or swimming. Their scavenging habits lead them to frequent garbage dumps, sewage outlets, and places where fish are cleaned.
Having visited the Netherlands many times one cannot help but find comparison in the countryside of PEI, it is flat with very few spots of elevation except for the coastal areas. This flat land makes Knox’s Dam across the Montague River in Victoria Cross all that more of a rarity as one of the few waterfalls in PEI and visited by few that are not from the area. Knox’s Dam started life as a grist and saw mill then becoming a small hydroelectric generator for the town to finally generating peace and tranquility for many a weary soul needing a tonic to the hustle and bustle around them or just maybe a really good picnic spot.

Yellow-rumped warbler on Cholla Cactus skeleton
Although genetically distinct, there is no plan to split Yellow-rumped warbler in to 3 or more species. In the USA we have Myrtle and Audubon's warblers and in Central America there is Goldman's and a few others. However, they are all still yellow-rumped warblers.
Here's couple of shots from this afternoon.
This is the first, a male Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) feeding off the flowers of our Butterfly bush.
I watched a pair of Anna's hummingbirds working an area. They'd land on a branch, then go over and do some sipping, then back to the branch, Mostly, they had their backs to me, but this shot gave me a good side view.

Waiting for a friend to go for a walk along the seafront, the sun's rays came streaming out down onto the sea.
Buckler's Hard is a hamlet situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River in the English county of Hampshire. With its Georgian cottages running down to the river, Buckler's Hard is part of the Beaulieu Estate. The hamlet is located some south of the village of Beaulieu.
Lieutenant's island in Wellfleet, Cape Cod is one of the most beautiful, serene and remote areas that I know of. A fantastic place for a walk!
One time I came here recently, I couldn't make it over to the island! It turns out that the whole area around the small bridge leading to the island was totally under water! It happens often, apparently, simply due to the tide. This time around, no problem. But I was a little concerned about the tide :))
