Allium ursinum

The Latin specific name ursinum translates to 'bear' and refers to the supposed brown bear's taste for the bulbs; folk tales describe the bears consuming them after awakening from hibernation.

Tango. That's the music, and the dance, which enchanted Al Pacino, at the time he was blind, in the movie Scent of a Woman. His name was Frank, he still had feelings so Frank danced, and enchanted everyone when he took the beautiful and unknown young woman to dance. Everyone fell silent in that large room, while Frank, the retired military man, who whirled in a poetic cadence, provoking sighs and pure enchantment around the four corners of the hall. And not just from the hall where he danced, but from all the movie theaters where that magnificent moment was immortalized.

Well Frank, whatever your name is, throw away that stupid weapon you carry in your heart. Let's all dance for peace. Open your eyes, Frank. Let's dance that amazing dream.

Burchell’s Coucal (Whitebrowned Coucal) is so beautiful, shy and yet such a beast when it comes to it’s eating habits.

This bird has a chestnut-brown back and similar wing feathers, a long tail with marked bands in its upper parts. They eat any prey smaller than itself (size ± 40 cm long & ±180 grams). It has a particular liking for young nestlings and the eggs of other birds. It will seek out and eat off the nest whatever it can find, and for this reason I call it a beast.

Many thanks to everyone who chooses to leave a comment or add this image to their favorites, it is much appreciated.

“Nature’s Goddess”

The lace like feathers of the Great Heron during breeding season is one of Mother Nature’s most dramatic scenes in the avian world.

I love it each year when our colorful Farmer's Market opens for the season.

Windsor, Ontario’s riverfront is a wonderful place to visit with the best views of downtown Detroit, Michigan and also the Ambassador Bridge (seen in the background) that links the two cities across the Detroit River. But this riverfront is also home to some very unique sculptures, such as this one titled ‘Eve’s Apple’.

Happy Bench Monday!!

HBM!!

It's kinda hard to see the bench but it's there. Surprisingly, because it's in a small town in the middle of no where, this place was kind of expensive and the people weren't that friendly.

We did have a wet Sunday here, and it looks like it's going to be a wet week..:( Anyway, hope your week goes well

Dining on a Gamble's quail by my kitchen door. He plucked the quail, ate 1/3 of him and left the carcass on my favorite chair. I cleaned up the mess not realizing he would return the next morning for breakfast. I'll know better next time.

Bird Species # (509) that I photographed and placed on my Flickr Photostream. Overall goal is 1000.

A brushfire had burned this area a couple of days prior to our arrival. On this trip to Uganda we used Ngoni Safaris Uganda. They provided excellent service. I highly recommend them.

It's torn where there's beauty, it's torn where there's death

It's torn where there's mercy but torn somewhat less

It's torn in the highest from kingdom to crown

The messages fly but the network is down

Bruised at the shoulder and cut at the wrist

The sea rushes home to its thimble of mist

The opposites falter, the spirals reverse

And Eve must re-enter the sleep of her birth

And up through the system, the worlds are withdrawn

From every dominion the mind stood upon

And now that it's over and now that it's done

The name has no number, not even the one

Anna’s Hummingbirds are mostly green and gray, without any rufous or orange marks on the body. The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray without direct sunlight.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are a blur of motion as they hover before flowers looking for nectar and insects. Listen for the male's scratchy metallic song and look for him perched above head level in trees and shrubs.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.

Thank you Maria Xenou Photodromos for reminding me with your beautiful picture and song that tomorrrow is Mother's day, in Greece.

You brought memories and a tear to an old man's eyes.

This is my contribution, dedicated to all the mothers of the world.

Please, listen to the song, sang by two Angelic voices, Susan Boyle and Jackie Evancho.

It's called "A mother's prayer"

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it.

It's a crazy and scary feeling when you don't know what's next and how it will go on. Is everything going to be okay, or can it get worse? For the moment i have lost confidence in the world ... in justice and in our legal system. How fast it can go downhill without a sledge or snowboard.

Happy Bench Monday!

This is Rabbit's Lounge. There last day was Memorial Day, May 25th. Rabbit, the owner, retired. Too bad too. This bar is in a seedy part of town, but it's an area that's being revitalized. In another a year or two..Who knows.

Hope your week goes well

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF MY FLICKR FRIENDS FOR THEIR COMMENTS, AWARDS, AND INVITES OVER THIS PAST YEAR. I APPRECIATE ALL OF THEM VERY MUCH AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AND COMMENTING ON ALL OF MY CONTACT'S IMAGES NEXT YEAR. I HOPE THAT THE NEW YEAR IS A GOOD ONE FOR EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU.

Slightly less well known than its lookalikes (House Finch and Purple Finch), the Cassin’s Finch is the characteristic rosy-tinged finch of the mountains of western North America.

The Cassin’s Finch was first collected on an 1850s expedition to the southwestern mountains by the Pacific Railroad Survey. The eminent ornithologist John Cassin, who created illustrations for the survey, called the pink-tinged finch the “greatest bird in the lot.” Cassin asked his friend and colleague Spencer Baird to name the new species after him.

Apparently Q's new secret weapon isn't as secret as he (or I) thought ;-) So here's yet another needle capture for Macro Monday's "EYE(S)" theme.

The row of seven needles is 3,5 cm / 1,37795 inches wide. Please view large.

Q's neue Geheimwaffe ist gar nicht so geheim wie er (und ich) dachte(n). Hier kommt also ein weiteres Nähnadel-Foto ;-)

Breite der Nadelreihe: 3,5 cm. Bitte zoomen ;-)

Humayun's Tomb, Delhi. This tomb, built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal.
