722-724 Main Street - 2 Antebellum homes in North Wheeling.

Friends of Wheeling has a major project scheduled to begin in 2022 – the rehabilitation of this antebellum duplex in North Wheeling. The property was originally owned by the Hughes family, which included brothers John (a Wheeling city councilman), Thomas (a tailor) and Alfred (a doctor), and sister Eliza (one of the first female doctors in what is now WV). Thomas and Alfred were considered ‘traitors’ when they signed the Ordinance of Secession at the beginning of the Civil War, urging Virginia to secede from the Union. Eliza was also a Southern sympathizer.

The property - in poor condition - has been donated to Friends of Wheeling. An anonymous ‘challenge donation’ of $25K has been received, with the donor offering another $25K if the initial amount can be matched. So Friends of Wheeling will be asking for help through additional donations and fund raisers.
