The world’s only rotating boat lift, The Falkirk Wheel links the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal 35 metres above.
Transforming the site of a former tar works, The Falkirk Wheel opened in 2002 replacing what was once a flight of 11 locks, thus reconnecting the two canals for the first time since the 1930s as part of the Millennium Link project.
An image that I'd been after for quite some time, having tantalisingly passed Falkirk numerous times over the past few years, conditions and timing always seemed to thwart me. This included a near disastrous attempt a couple of years ago when the canal was closed for maintenance; I pressed on regardless and nearly got locked in overnight at the site for my foolhardiness. Fortunately some forward planning and careful weather watching was rewarded with a dazzling purple light show producing this result at dusk on my visit last month.
