RR Restaurant No. 42 on display at Heritage Square Golden CO on 9-3-1981
This is an 1887 Baldwin 2-8-0 #8626.
Served on D&RG from 1887 as road no. 420 when it was sold to the RGS in 1916 where it served as road no. 42 until RGS ceased operations on 3-21-1953. This was the last engine to operate over the RGS, and was used extensively during the scrapping operations
No. 42 and other RGS equipment was acquired by Bob Richardson's Narrow Gauge Motel in Alamosa, CO in 1953. Bob sold No. 42 to Magic Mountain Amusement Park in February of 1958. No. 42 was shopped in Alamosa and later operated at the park until 1969.
In February of 1969, Engine #42 and the train formerly used at the Magic Mountain theme park - cars 2102, 8714, a 3000-service D&RG boxcar (3748?), and caboose 0409, moved to the Woodmoor corporate headquarters at Monument CO and put on display. Woodmoor had purchased Magic Mountain, and converted it to Heritage Square
In May of 1971, Engine #42 and the train used at the Magic Mountain theme park were moved back to Golden CO, to Heritage Square. The caboose was converted to a bar, 2102 and 8714 converted to dining areas (with their sides enclosed now), and the depot became the main restaurant. 3748 ended up as a concession stand. #42 remained here until 1981.
No. 42 was purchased by Ed Gerlits from Heritage Square in 1981 and then traded to Charlie Bradshaw and the D&SNG railroad (the trade was for 6 charter runs on the D&SNG).
No. 42 is currently on display at Durango & Silverton Roundhouse Museum, Durango, CO (cosmetically restored). It has been reported that this is a pretty beat-up locomotive. The frame is reportedly broken in five places and welded back together. Also some very bad quarter-slip on one driver as well as extensive firebox work is needed
