#1 - School Run (5)

Challenge #1

Take a route you're familiar with but have never photographed along and photograph someone or something every 100 or so steps.

– Vanessa Winship

For this I challenge I chose the route of my school run, something I drive 195 days of the year and yet I have only stopped my car 3 times in the 3 years I have driven it in order to make a photograph somewhere along the route. I managed to walk my route 8 times over the past month which enabled me to compare different times of the day (although I favoured the afternoon for some reason). I was surprised how much things changed once I was out of my car; things that I quickly glance at when I drive past and think 'I would like to photograph that' lost the 'shine' that attracted me to them in the first place, but I soon saw other things that I completely missed because I go past them so quickly.

One of things I was determined to do on this challenge (and that's after seeing Vanessa's advice in the discussion thread) was to approach people I didn't know and ask if I could take their portrait. I'm pleased to say I have finally done it and although I got more no's than yes's, it certainly has given me more confidence (I even got no's from people I knew who were on the route!). I just need to learn to relax a little so hopefully my portraiture will improve, so a big thank you to all the people that stopped for me, you have helped me to achieve something that I have wanted to do for a very long time.
