A Moment of Clarity 3970

The Greta oto, or Glasswing Butterfly is found in Central and South America. Most butterflies have tiny scales that adhere to the wing surface, giving them their color. Have you’ve ever held a butterfly and seen a powdery substance on your hands afterward? This powder is made up of some of the scales that have rubbed off. Glasswings have some of these scales on the periphery of the wings but the rest of the wing membranes are scale free, and therefore, clear. It’s clear that this adaptation may render them more difficult to see, track, and capture. It’s kind of a twist on an old adage, “What you see is what you get!” So, maybe the inverse is true…transparency is allusivity. #GlasswingButterfly
