Mom in Action 5651
A mother piping plover runs to the waterline to be with her chicks. Her chicks are almost grown and will fledge within a week or so. By now they are fairly independent, and scurry about the waterfront on their own. From time to time she still calls melodiously to them and takes off to make sure that they are well. Males have a more pronounced neck band during the breeding season. It's the only reliable method of distinguishing between the sexes. Even though it seems that summer has just started, the fledglings and some adults will begin migrating south in just a few weeks. By mid September all of these plovers have left the northeast. And you thought you had to go back to school early! #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveBirds #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Animals in #America #Birds in the #USA #Birding #Nature #Wildlife #Plovers #PipingPlovers
