"Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust"

The cremations on the burning ghats of Varanasi are carried out in the open, in plain site of onlookers. These cremation ghats certainly do serve as a reminder of just how fragile human life is, as it becomes way too apparent that we are all just flesh, blood and bone. The fires coughed out great plumes of sticky, black smoke, the smell and the thickness of which was unmistakable to what was burning.

The reason the cremation on ghats of Varanasi is considered so sacred is because the cremation fires are lit by a flame that is believed to have emanated from Lord Shiva himself and said to be burning for thousands of years. As per beliefs, cremation on the holy ghats of Varanasi offers the opportunity to attain moksha - A state of liberation from the cycle of rebirth and death.

Cremation runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, come what may. It runs full capacity and its a place where dead sometimes have to queue in the narrow alleyway outside the ghat, for their turn to be cremated.
