Il mitico ingresso agli Inferi degli antichi romani, è un vulcano allo stato quiescente facente parte del complesso vulcanico dei Campi Flegrei. Noto per le sue esalazioni di vapori sulfurei alla temperature di 160°, le emissioni di anidride carbonica e i vulcanetti di fango bollente. Fino a tutto il 1800, la Solfatara è stata una rinomata stazione termale, e inoltre vi si estraevano composti dello zolfo. Rappresenta l'epicentro del fenomeno ciclico del bradisismo.

The mytical entrance to the ancient romans Hell, is an inactive volcano, part of the vulcanic region known as the Phlegrean Fields. It's famous for its steaming jets of sulphurous vapour at temperature of 160° C, the emission of carbon dioxid and small volcanoes of boiling mud. Sulphur was extracted here in the past, and until 1800 it was a spa renowned for its mineral waters, natural saunas and mud. The Solfatara is the epicentre of the cyclic phenomenon of the rising and lowering of the ground level in the Phlegrean Fields known as bradisism.
