Notes: See: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/5270186804/in/set-72157623... for information about the Hensoldt company and its Dialyt series of Abbe-Koenig roof prismed binoculars.
Although Hensoldt’s lightweight version of the Jadg-Dialyt 6X42 was reportedly manufactured only from 1936-1943, there is evidence that it continued to be produced for a short period after WW II, the relatively low five digit serial number on this one indicating it was among a batch of binoculars manufactured 1945-1946 for delivery to United States departments for civilian use.
Like many of the older Dialyts, this one suffered from exterior corrosion of metal surfaces, flaking paint and seized center focus and dioptre mechanisms which, as usual, were a devil to strip down, clean and re-lubricate. However, also as with many of these old Dialyts, its exterior and mechanical condition belied the condition of its internal optics which after a light cleaning were found to be pristine. Optical performance is excellent – a nicely bright image for uncoated optics, good resolution and edge sharpness to at least 75%. And the large 7mm exit pupil, seldom seen on 6X binoculars, makes for comfortable viewing.
