Alcatel-Lucent Tech Symposium Bell Labs Tour
Mark Earnshaw, Bell Labs Researcher, shows some of the ways Bell Labs is constantly pushing the boundaries of optical communications providing a glimpse into Bell Labs' Silicon Lightwave Integration Models Line (SlimLine) clean-room, which is used for prototyping optical components, including those in the emerging area of silicon photonics.
The team also highlighted Space Division Multiplexing (SDM), which uses the added dimension of space to create multiple pathways through a single optical fiber, similar to taking multiple superhighways (and all the traffic on them) and packing them into the space occupied by a single superhighway today.
