SD40 Saturday

An oddly-mild, dark, windy Saturday during the middle of Christmas season seems like just as good a time as any to share a shot of a red engine with some snow. Going back to February 28, 2004, a rare-at-the-time daylight MOPO (short-lived symbol for MOED) made for a nice chase over Guilford's West End between East Portal and East Deerfield for me, Jeff Bray, and Gary Schermerhorn. The three of us waited at East Portal until we saw the headlight, then decided to split up in order to cover multiple angles (imagine that!). I chose "Hoosac Tunnel Station"--the Tunnel Road crossing in Rowe, MA (you know, the one accessed by the super sketchy bridge with wooden planks).

I took decent notes back then (in the age before digital photos that are automatically time stamped) and--for those who care--ED-3 (bound for North Adams and the Adams Industrial Track) with the MEC 372 arrived at CPF415 at 11:30 AM, then held for MOPO which went by at 12:30 PM. MOPO's full power lineup was CP SD40-2 #5701, CP SD40-2 #5821, and CP SD40-2 #5827. Later in the day, SEED arrived in East Deerfield at 5:30 PM, and MOAY came out of East Portal at 6:45 PM.

Lastly, back then the cheapest place to get gas on the West End was the Stewart's in Pownal, Vermont, so I used to track the price and then report it for everyone on the Guilford Yahoo! Group. On this day, the price was $1.65 per gallon. Boy does that hurt...
