¬photo #3

Objective 2: Creative Exposure

The camera mode: Av because I could lower the shutter speed to 30 seconds by changing the aperture.

f stop used: f22

shutter speed used: 30 seconds so I had enough time to “paint”

ISO used: 100 to increase the quality of the picture

Exposure compensation: none

Focal length: 18mm because it was inside of a room

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

Unity: The monochromatic color scheme unifies the picture and draws you eye to the center of the picture while removing clutter at the same time.

Contrast: The bright light of the “painted” word contrasts against the black background and creates interest.

Balance: The contrast between the “painted” word and the black background prevents the word, or the background from becoming heavier than the other. The lens flare also lightens up the background as well.

Movement: The implied movement of the strokes of the word makes your eye travel across the picture and when the line loops back at the end it brings your eye back to the center of the picture.

Emphasis: The contrast between the “painted” word and the background emphasises the word and draws your eye towards it.

Value: The monochromatic color scheme turns the whole picture into a scale of values using a rose color as its base.

Texture: The different streaks and thicknesses of the light “painting” creates a texture that is smooth and has its own sense of luminescence because it was drawn from behind using a flashlight. The lens flares and rose color makes the picture feel softer as well.

Color: The color scheme is a monochromatic rose color that simplifies the picture to the bare minimum and gets rid of distractions.

Space: this picture used negative space and positive space. The “painted” word is positive space that stands out against the background and is the center of interest. The black background is the negative space that recedes from the eye, while all of the lens flare in the picture almost starts to blend the negative and positive spaces together.

Shape: The flat aspects of the “painted” word makes this picture 2D along with the shallow depth of field this picture has.

Form: Where the “painted” word recedes from the eye because there is less light it makes the picture look 3D along with the “backlighting” of the lens flare.

Line: this picture has lots of line. All of the streaks of light in the “painted” word are made up of line along with the word itself. The word, since it was done in handwriting is a leading line that starts at the beginning of the L and ends in the back on the left side of the picture at the end of the underline so it’s a small jump for your eye to get back to the beginning of the L.

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

Corrections/adjustments made:

Temperature

Tint

Exposure

Highlights

Shadows

Whites

Sharpening

Noise reduction/luminance

Objective 6: Critique

I hate the way the e turns into the underline. I think if I did it over again I’d make that curve more gradual instead of that sharp point. I also dislike that yellow pair of streaks at the bottom of the picture. I think that they’re lens flares so if I did the picture over again I’d try to prevent those.

Objective 7: Photographic Styles (ex. portrait, landscape, etc.) – Explain why the settings and composition are appropriate for the style of photography

Type/style of photography: Light Painting

The mode was in Av because I’m most comfortable with that mode and the aperture is f/22 because I needed to slow down the shutter speed considerably. The shutter speed in 30 seconds because I needed enough time to “paint” the word love.
