Day 204 of 365

"Bento Bugs or Cheese Plate: An Ode to 'Lost Boys'"

Now I know what happens when you miss one trash pick-up. The garbage becomes ripe for the creation of new life!!! Naturally, my first thought was how I might photograph (and wrangle) these little guys. My 4-year-old was anxious to assist in the collecting of our subjects, and even held the bowl of them up to her face, appearing to rock them to sleep. So cute!! As you may have heard (or experienced), these little critters smell EXACTLY like cheese. I opened the bowl when I was ready to shoot, and the waft of cheese was undeniable!! I nearly ate one....but somehow resisted the urge. Now for the lighting. I initially shot our lavae from a lower angle, and projected an image of a window pane on the white background. Unfortunately, this lower angle did not allow for a complete reveal of our tiny friends. So, I angled a strip box above, from about ten o'clock. You can clearly see the direct reflection of the box on the left side of the table. The larger source offers a clean, airy look to the image, and also avoids the potential overexposure on the spoon which could result from a small light source on a highly reflective, white surface. I took about twenty exposures, only adjusting the angle of the spoon and chopsticks in relation to the grain of the wood...and allowed the maggots (that's what they are) to do their thing. Thanks for sticking around to read this!!
