Route 66 and Road Trip '96

by john4kc

Pre-Digital age photos of a 17 day road trip I made in 1996. I could kill myself for not taking pictures of everything. Everything was new to my eyes. I didn't know what was special, or what would soon disappear. I thought a motel was a motel, and that those motels etc. had always been there and always would be.

I WAS WRONG.

I know I saw the Blue Swallow on this trip and I thought I saw the Conoco Tower, but I have no photos.

July 1996 we left Kansas City and headed down 71 Hwy to Carthage and headed west. I really didn't know much about 66 at the time. Honestly, I'm not sure if I cared too much at the start of the trip because I didn't really know what it meant. I was well past Tulsa before I spotted old pavement (that shows how clueless I was). I remember getting excited about that. I was like finding an old dinosaur bone or something. We took lots of side trips including pueblos in NM, Four Corners, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Canyon De Chelly, Grand Canyon etc. All the way to Las Vegas NV and back through Utah, CO and KS. A lot of 66 was "missed" for those places, which is really what the trip was about.

As I look through my photo, I realize I saw a LOT for one trip. However, I sure missed a lot of 66.
