My 300th Design: 姚蘇蓉 Yao Su Rong, bookcase
atelier ying, nyc
The Taiwanese singer Yao Su Rong is a favorite of mine.
I wanted design #300 to be as simple as possible, and to be full of life.
A bedside bookcase cabinet for holding valuable 1970's LP record albums. Just high enough and small enough to place next to a bed from where it and its contents can be easily inspected.
The cabinet has three shelves with absolutely no buckling by placing two equidistant wood supports under each shelf which is then sandwiched between end layers of thin wood. The finish is black lacquered wood inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
The length of two feet is perfect for a small but well-played collection and accessible by both young children and the aged. A 3/4" space above the LPs allows a minimum of dust. The collection can be cleaned daily with soft cloth, in the style of an English butler, it will achieve a quality that is "lively", of perfect scale, handy, and an object that you would touch every single day. The patina would be achieved so slowly through this daily care that after decades you would scarcely notice any patina at all, so that using the collection would always feel exactly as if fifty one years ago felt like yesterday. A design parti so simple it is not worth mentioning. Indeed, this piece of furniture could equally hold a set of Agatha Christie paperbacks (dimensions will be different). It is like a bespoke gentleman's suit; the blueprint pattern would be the same.
Two circular gold handles adorn each side. One pulls out a thin shelf for cleaning records and the other handle turns counterclockwise to open a compartment at the base, a secret drawer with a collection of family seals in ivory.
