Finding an undamaged Rose around here in December is a difficult task, but one I love to take on. I didn’t find a beauty this day but did find a Rose that is lovely in its own slightly tattered way.
Have a Very Merry Christmas !

Blackburnian Warbler
(Setophaga fusca, formerly Dendroica fusca)
The Blackburnian Warbler is a small New World warbler. They breed in eastern North America, from southern Canada, westwards to the southern Canadian Prairies, the Great Lakes region and New England, to North Carolina.
Blackburnian Warblers are migratory, wintering in southern Central America and in South America. These birds were named after Anna Blackburne, an English botanist.

This species ranges from Mexico to the mountains of W Colombia. All forms of this brush-finch have a white stripe down the midline of the crown from the forehead to the nape.
White-naped Brush-finches are found in subtropical to temperate elevations, from 1200 to 3100 m in elevation. They forage on the ground, often in family groups.

Train 300 rolls eastward with Castle Mountain looming the in background. Taking inspiration from a shot of Nicholas Morants here at Johnston Creek, minus the scaffolding I wanted to shoot this different angle of Castle Mountain that not many people seem to shoot.

Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster
(Red-bellied Grackle / Cacique candela)
The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.

40022 Brescia Est Fascio Merci - Rotterdam Waalhaven Zuid
It was discovered on 5 August 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop.
Located in the southern constellation Sculptor, NGC 300 measures 22 arc-minutes in apparent size and is only about 6 million light years distant. By comparison, M31 is 2.5 million, M33 2.73 million.
The spiral arms are full of young blue stars with H alpha regions interspersed throughout the galaxy. Although it appears to be face-on, it’s actually inclined at an angle of 42 degrees. It is gravitationally interacting with nearby NGC 55.
NGC 300 closely resembles M33. Both are replete with nebulae bright in Ha and OIII, both are similarly inclined spirals and both produce large numbers of unresolved stars that look like noise.

Siproeta epaphus epaphus
(Rusty-tipped Page / Epafos Puntas Oxidadas)
In my garden. La Ceja, Colombia; 2.300 meters above sea level.
Siproeta epaphus is distributed from Mexico to Argentina. This species is scarce in lowland areas, but commonly seen in two's and three's in disturbed habitats at elevations between 400-2.300m, favouring forest edges and clearings, well vegetated riverbanks, roadsides and pastures.
The Rusty-tipped Page has large wings, averaging 7.0–7.5 cm (2.8–3.0 in).
