Avon began publishing paperbacks in 1941, The 1st 41 books in the Avon series were unnumbered. Avon started numbering with #42 in 1944 which happened to be James Hilton's 'The Passionate Year'.
The copy on the left is the 2nd printing. The 1st printing was in 1941 and had 'Globe endpapers', but had the same cover art. However, in 1943 'Ill Wind' was printed a 3rd time, but this time, inexplicably, without the stagehand in the lower left corner. Maybe the editor thought it made the cover more aesthetically pleasing and a little less 'busy'?
