North Wilkesboro Speedway - 1947

A wonderful old photo of a crash on the beginning of the backstretch at an early post-war stock car race. Buddy Shuman drove the #24 car and Ed Samples drove the #90.

The photo is labeled "Peacehaven Spwy", but the fence doesn't match what was at Peace Haven.

Peace Haven had advertising billboards (Coke, Pepsi, 7up, Dr.Pepper, Camel, L.A.Reynolds, Lincoln Cycle Sales, Cadillac Olds, Hiatts Wrecker Service,..) down the middle of the backstretch, a steep tree covered hill beyond a creek behind the fence, the fence bracing on the outer side down the backstretch, and the track surface going right up to the fence instead of having a large plant covered berm at the edge.

This is North Wilkesboro Speedway in late 1947. Buddy Shuman's #24 was owned by North Wilkesboro Speedway and has it written on the roof above the driver's door.

This photo hangs on the wall at J S Pulliam Barbeque in Winston-Salem, NC.
