East Lancashire Steam Event October 2016

by A.R. Live

This was a special event. Way back in February I stood out in the Sleet and wind on a grassy bank waiting for the newly refurbished Flying Scotsman. She was running late but then she arrived, riding in tandem with another engine. A slight brake problem meant the Flying Scotsman needed help. But there she was, still in her black wartime livery.

Fast forward to October and she returned, resplendent in her British Rail Green Livery. All throughout the previous week we had been enjoying a bit of an indian summer, sunny skies and all the colours of Autumn. It was no surprise that arriving on the morning for the shoot, the heavens opened and heavy rain set in for the morning. A disaster I thought. Most other photographers had their Canon cameras with no worry about bumping ISO, but me with a D800 thinking this won't work. Luckily I have a bit of fast glass and decided to keep it on, rather than switching to one of my other lenses. Swallowed hard as I bumped up the ISO to 1600, 3200 and hoped to recover something in post. The results were not what I was hoping for, but for the most, I'm happy with the outcome.
