2017 - Disaster Relief - Pocahontas, Arkansas - Flooding

by zendt66

Heavy rain in late April and early May 2017 resulted in flooding in northeast Arkansas. One town impacted by flooding was Pocahontas, Arkansas. Flood state is 17 feet for the Black River but the water topped out at 31.5 feet following a levee break.

Arkansas Southern Baptists organized a "Mud-out" mission to assist impacted homeowners, bringing in recovery teams from surrounding states. Our Oklahoma DR staff sent a team of ten to assist with the effort. Teams were housed at an old nursing home that is no longer used, which also served as a temporary shelter for displaced persons.

Our team was joined for one day by volunteer help from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and from the University of Central Arkansas.
