2016 - Disaster Relief - Baton Rouge, LA

by zendt66

In August 2016, areas of Louisiana in and around Baton Rouge received what was described by their governor as a "historic, unprecedented flooding event". Some areas received a reported 30 inches of rain in just 72 hours with more following intermittently.

Oklahoma Southern Baptists dispatched their mobile kitchen, a tractor-trailer rig, to Baton Rouge along with a skeleton crew to run it during the startup. The crew was recruited just 48 hours before they needed to be in place. Fortunately, there were many volunteers from the host church (Istrouma Baptist Church) and the community to assist in food preparation. In all, somewhere between 100,000 and 140,000 meals were prepared by the initial crew and volunteers during the nine days they were deployed. A more complete replacement crew took over, starting with day ten of cooking.
