Pal portrait #1: Disco~Stu

So this is me and Stu's new project: pal portraits.

We figured that the best way to improve our portraits is not to rely on SPs, but step back behind the lens where we belong and start learning how to direct from behind the camera, compose a shot and generally get a grip on getting the most out of the person you're shooting.

What I've learnt from this is that I have a lot to learn about composing a shot. It's easy to get a goos shot off, but the composition is what makes it interesting, and that's where this shot lacks. Compare it to this shot from Stu and you'll see that a putting a little thought and effort into your composition makes all the difference.

On the plus side I didn't have to do loads of processing, just a bit of white balance adjustment to ad a bit of warmth, a vignette and a bit of kick to the contrast.

But this is all good, this is why we're doing this - to find out where we lack and try to improve on it.

So . . . pal portrait #1. Hopefully #2 will be more interesting. Sorry Stu! It's not your fault I can't frame a shot . . .

Not for Strobist info: SB600 hand-held to camera left at either 1/16 or 1/32 power (can't remember). Fired with CLS.
