170/365 # Reasons to be cheerful

What a strange day. And to go with it, a strange 365.

Ben is much better today, but had a rough night - throwing up five times in five hours is no fun, and when you're four years old it must be terrifying. He was very brave though, braver than I am when I'm sick, and seems to have bounced right back today. We bought him a little pair of binoculars (or goggles, as he calls them) to take to Centre Parcs and to cheer him up after last night. Reason #1 for me to raise a slight smile.

I dragged my ass outta bed to go to work this morning, only to find when I got there (after a half hour journey I might add) that the server had either [a] been switched off or [b] someone pulled the plug accidently. Needless to say, I couldn't get at any of my work as it's all sitting in a folder on a network drive, and couldn't log into payroll cos that's obviously on a server too so I couldn't do anything. Wasted journey. Could've stayed in bed. Arseholes. Why is this a reason to smile? Because now I'm holiday properly! Hurray.

Now, onto this strange photo. It's one of those days where I didn't have any good ideas, nor was I getting any good photos. One of those days where I get frustrated and wonder why I started doing 365.

So by this stage of it I've sort of got this plan if all else fails. Attach 50mm lens to camera body, get a good clear photo . . . and then give it a kick up the ass in Lightroom and Photoshop after. Apply textures liberally. Cross fingers. Hope for the best.

Following these simple rules I got this shot. I quite like it. It's not a creative masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a shot I know I'll look back on and be happy at how it came out. However it is a clear case of style over substance.

I did put a bit of effort into it. I took three differently treated versions of this shot and combined them in Photoshop, then found this swirly ink texture and chucked that on, for no other reason than I thought it looked good. One TTV border, a bit of text in the bottom right hand corner, and one more trip through Lightroom and here it is.

Yeah.

Now, as long as all goes well and none of us pick up Ben's tummy bug, we'll be off on holiday Monday. So far I've posted a shot on the day everyday, which is something I'm keen to continue as a sort of unwritten, personal rule of my 365. The apartment we're staying in apparently has wi-fi, and I'll be taking my laptop anyway to download photos from the camera every day, so I've intstalled Lightroom and Flickr Uploader on there in preparation. No Photoshop for a whole week. I want to post a shot a day still, but not at the detriment of our holiday, so it's Lightroom only and even then it's only on there so I can improve exposure, levels etc.

It's going to be a week of holiday snaps basically, and I might upload a few more when we're back but while I'm away, if I post it'll be one 365 shot only. Just like normal really, ha ha!

I'll at least try to keep up with my contacts even if I'm not posting, but I must remember I'm on me hols and not to get sucked into the Flickrverse! I'm sure Lydia will clip me round the ear if I get too into it.

And hey, ain't it cold today? I have spent the whole afternoon with a hot water bottle stuffed down my trousers. God's honest truth. Actually located in my trousers. It's cosy - try it. I fell asleep on the sofa this afternoon with my hat and scarf on, and my hot water bottle nestling snugly.

Awesome.
