Liberty Point Eggspress

It only took waiting three hours for the weather to cooperate, and it finally pulled through in the nick of time.

Sugar Express’ “Sugar Eggspress” final run would be the 4 PM train out of Clewiston, departing on-time with a moderately full train. Following a successful catch at the Sugarland Canal trestle, a hectic 4.1 mile drive would ensue, driving along unmarked dirt roads through private cane fields, dodging loose rocks and an unexpected closed gate [a story me and Richard will tell until the end of time].

I would arrive to the spot at Liberty Point with no less than 3 minutes to spare, the 148’s CB&Q 5 chime audible from about a mile away. With the train clear of the Shawnee cane loadout to the south, the engineer opens up the throttle through the Liberty Point curve to continue their run to Moore Haven at track speed, 40 MPH. A gap between clouds finally allowed the sun to shine down on the Class 141 Pacific as it sweeped around the curve headed west.
