Fasting on Ashura
Narrated By Ibn Abbas : When the Prophet arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) and they said, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh," On that, the Prophet said to his companions, "You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day."
Sahih Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Hadith 4682
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) narrated a supplication to Allah, seeking forgiveness for those who fast on the Day of Ashura. He said, "Fasting on the Day of Ashura, I hope, will expiate the sins of the previous year."
The fast of Ashura falls on the 10th day of Muharram, and it is also encouraged to fast a day before and after, i.e., the 9th and 11th of Muharram. By doing so, you can earn the blessings and rewards of this special month, known as the "Month of Allah," as referred to by our Prophet.
