Wikipedia: Ashura is a day of commemoration in Islam. It occurs annually on the tenth of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura marks the parting of the Red Sea by Moses and the salvation of the Israelites. Also on this day, Noah disembarked from the Ark, God forgave Adam, and Joseph was released from prison, among various other auspicious events having occurred on Ashura according to Sunni tradition. Ashura is celebrated in Sunni Islam through supererogatory fasting and other acceptable expressions of joy.
By contrast, for Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning as they annually commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the third Shia imam. Husayn refused on moral grounds to pledge his allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya (r. 680–683) and was subsequently killed, alongside most of his male relatives and his small retinue, by the Umayyad army in the Battle of Karbala on Ashura 61 AH (680 CE). Among the Shia, mourning for Husayn is viewed as an act of protest against oppression, a struggle for God, and a means of securing the intercession of Husayn in the afterlife. Ashura is observed through mourning gatherings, processions, and dramatic reenactments. In such ceremonies, Shia mourners strike their chests to share in the pain of Husayn.

In Kashan, Iran, the "Mad of Hussein" as they call themselves were mourning in memory of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, who was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I at Karbala (now in Iraq). The shia men were in a giant and dark room, moving and singing in circles for two hours listening to the Mollah words who was telling about glorious life of Hussein. The room was full, lit by very few lights (it is mourning time) and so hot that my camera was like coming out of a bath...Me too!

For Shia Muslims, the commemoration of Ashura is not a festival but rather a sad event, while Sunni Muslims view it as a victory God gave to Moses.
For Shia Muslims, it is a period of intense grief and mourning. Mourners congregate at a mosque for sorrowful, poetic recitations in memory of the martyrdom of Husayn, lamenting and grieving to the tune of beating drums and chants of "Ya Hussain".
Also, Ulamas give sermons with themes of Husayn's personality and position in Islam, and the history of his uprising. The Sheikh of the mosque retells the Battle of Karbala to allow his listeners to relive the pain and sorrow endured by Husayn and his family and they read Maqtal Al-Husayn.
Certain traditional flagellation rituals such as Talwar zani (talwar ka matam or sometimes tatbir) use a sword. Other rituals such as zanjeer zani or zanjeer matam involve the use of a zanjeer (a chain with blades)

Sirjan, Iran - DEC 05: Ashura is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE).[1] According to Sunni Muslim tradition, Muhammad fasted on this day and asked other people to fast.
In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday.

The Day of Ashura is on the tenth day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic Calendar.
It is commemorated by Muslims as a day of mourning of the martyrdom of Hazrat Husayn (May allah be pleased with him) the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH ( in AHt: October 10, 680 CE). The massacre of Hazrat Husayn (May allah be pleased with him) with small group of his companions and family members had great impact on the religious conscience of Muslims. Especially Shia Muslims have ever remembered it with sorrow and passion. Mourning for the Prophet's (pbuh) grand son and his companions began almost immediately after the Battle of Karbala, by his survivor relatives and supporters and continued till to date all over the Muslim world.
In almost all the Muslim majority countries including Bangladesh and even in India Ashura is a national holiday. I shot the moment in front of Hussaini Dalan (the main Imamabara or house of Imams of Shia Muslims) in the old part of Dhaka where people from all walks of life gathered to commemorate the very special day.
In Kashan, Iran, the "Mad of Hussein" as they call themselves were mourning in memory of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, who was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I at Karbala (now in Iraq). The shia men were in a giant and dark room, crying like small kids with lots of tears and sobs while listening to the Mollah words who was telling about glorious life of Hussein. The room was so full and so hot that many had to go outside. This man, with his son, had left the room, and was crying like hundreds of others adults in the street. Many kids were with their parents, and did not understand this flood of emotion.
