rp @moemotivate: It’s so important that you understand the rules of engagement so you don’t cause more pain and harm to a community of people that you’re aiming to support.
You don’t get to make up the rules or play by what you think is necessary when this isn’t your reality or your pain.
Things won’t make sense to you.
You won’t get it.
But you can still show compassion and learn—if you humble yourself enough and acknowledge that people don’t need to measure or filter their pain through your limited perspective or ability to understand.
Because you don’t understand something doesn’t invalidate the pain and if you caused the pain it does not excuse you from the responsibility of acknowledging the pain caused and working to make things right.
And this is an area many white people struggle with because of their internalized tendency to center themselves above others, especially people of color.
Thus when you acknowledge this tendency and intentionally work to dismantle it you can get to a place of true compassion which can lead to being able to learn and grow. - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems
