According to 2017 NFPA 70 Code 210.12, Any 15- or 20-amp circuit not supplying a GFCI circuit is required to have an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter as protection. That means if you hire in an electrician to replace an outlet in your living room and that circuit is not AFCI protected, by code he is required to install an AFCI breaker.
