Can piles be avoided during pregnancy?

Yes, with a little care, piles can be prevented by avoiding constipation. Though piles mostly occur in the third trimester of your pregnancy from week 29 to week 40 (i.e. in the seventh, eighth and ninth month).

To avoid getting constipated,

- Drink plenty of water

- Include ample fresh fruits and vegetables

- Include some high-fiber foods like pears, green peas, beans, lentils, brown rice, wholemeal bread, and chapatis

- Practice the Kegel or pelvic floor exercises to increase circulation around the rectum and increase the strength of the muscles in the vagina and perineum

- Rest your feet on a stool often. Could also repeat the same when in the toilet since this position helps to open the bowels more easily

- Do not withhold going to the toilet for longer periods

- Consult a piles doctor to prescribe a mild laxative
