Final Stand
With the onset of the most recent batch of SD70MAC rebuilds, now diving into the 4700 series, CSX has made the decision to begin storing all of their active dash 8s and dash 9s, with the goal to supposedly have them all stored by the end of March. As probably the biggest fan of these engines, this news was extremely saddening to me. Not all was immediately lost, however, as one of the holdouts was running only an hour away from home. C40-8WM #7807 has been living on CSX's W&W Subdivision for roughly a month now, going back and forth on L231 and L233 from Pigford Yard in Warsaw to the respective destinations of Rocky Mount and Clinton/Rose Hill. Knowing that this could very well be the last chance I have to see an active CSX dash 8, I've gone out twice now to document its final stand in relative obscurity in eastern North Carolina. This was my winning shot of it, seen climbing up the hill out of Dudley on L231-13. 7807 is one of the more unique units, sporting high mounted ditchlights like an AC44, and also having an EMD style bell. The dash 8s have soldiered on into 2024, but this very well could be the last year we see them running. Only time will tell.
