Make Haste at Mumford
After shoving out the north end of Brazos Yard at Tatsie, UP 4014 highballs southward for Houston at Mumford in central Texas. The passenger special raced and passed a freight train on the parallel tracks, seen in the distance.
The Big Boy is on UP's Navasota Sub, which runs parallel to UP's Giddings Sub for about 5 miles from Tatsie to Mumford. This arrangement goes back to when these were owned by the separate railroads, the MP and the SP. It should be noted that the MP & SP historically crossed at Tatsie, but post UP-SP merger that diamond was replaced with a crossover and the subdivisions now officially cross at Mumford.
Also of note, the Hearne to Houston leg was one of the few parts of the "Heartland of America Tour" where UP 4014 ran without a diesel helper. The crew took UP 4015 off the train before departing Brazos Yard, leading to a historic experience with the steam engine doing all the work.
