It's all about the keywords

It's safe to say that people's lives revolve around apps these days. In the early days of #smartphones, there was only a handful of them. Today there are more than 2 million. And these are just counting the #mobile-based #apps, not #web-based apps.

So, you have a business plan for a service you would like to sell. You have decided it is going to be done through an app. It doesn’t matter what the service is about, you could selling chocolate cakes or lawn care equipment, the science that goes into a successful app is pretty much the same. And it needs to do something called “optimization”. In the good old days, only around two to three percent of app users searched and found apps through search engines. Today, it's around 27 % and growing. Optimization simply means getting noticed more by search engines. The simple matter of fact is that search engines like Google, are now ranking apps. The better the ranking, the higher priority it will get in search results.

When someone searches for an app on their smartphone or any mobile device, the app will appear on what’s known as an app pack. App packs are usually a stack of six apps. If there are more apps, then they will fall below the stack, and the viewer will need to scroll down to see the rest. The rating and price will also be shown. The idea here is to get the app in the first stack of six. This is because most people have short attention spans and will not go much further once they see what they want. In fact, in web-based searches, consumers will rarely go beyond the second page.

This is where #optimization comes into play. The key here is, well, the #keyword. When someone is searching for something, say, chocolate cakes, they are most likely going to type chocolate cake in the search query. Therefore, the bakery selling the cake has to optimize their app to match that. In this case, it would simply be “chocolate cake”, not “brown tasty cake”. This is because most people using search engines start their search using a specific term, or a noun. This also includes the app title and not just the web page description. Some apps will include the name of the app as well as a description. The app title does come with restrictions on how many characters can be used.

There are some tricks to the trade, especially when it comes to web-based app search. Most people will use the word “app” when searching online for an app. But this is not necessarily the case with mobile users. Therefore, using the word “app” in the title of the app will give it better ranking opportunities. And as mentioned before, ranking the app is highly important. Apps are rated in several ways, but the most common one is the star rating system.

In fact, a #search-engine like #Google will give priority to an app that has better ratings, as opposed to better optimization. If all of this sounds a bit complicated then that’s normal. In fact optimization or search engine optimization, has grown to become a science of its own. There are people who study it closely and have built entire careers around it. And these are the people who can help you get that app off the ground and running.
