Development Engineering Tools

The City of #Vaughan Archives is home to a diverse collection of government records, which are readily available to the public. Recently, the Archives received a unique transfer of materials from our Development Engineering Services Department, which included tools that were once used by the department prior to the introduction of certain computer software programs such as AutoCAD. Featured above are two of these tools, including a polar planimeter and a case containing 55 railroad curves. Used as a drafting instrument, planimeters helped staff measure irregular areas or shapes on physical maps and plans to determine metric area. In contrast, the railroad curves were used in the design and layout of roads, as each of the 55 templates varied in length and curvature. Both sets of tools were used up until the 1990s and demonstrate the advancement of City technology over the past several decades.
