Honda Red Rider 2004 Team

Following a successful 2003 campaign that included defending the 250 Supercross crown and once again dominating the AMA 250 Motocross Championship, the Honda Red Riders ride a wave of momentum into another prosperous year. Familiar faces highlight the 2004 Red Rider lineup and every individual shares a determination to uphold Honda’s winning tradition.

“We really couldn’t ask for a more successful year than we had in 2003, but that’s not to say we’re not striving for even more in 2004,” says American Honda’s Motorcycle Sports Manager Chuck Miller. “With riders such as Ricky Carmichael, Ernesto Fonseca and Nathan Ramsey on Honda’s CR®250R, CRF™450R and new CRF™250R, we’re hoping to stand out once again as the dominant team on the Supercross and motocross circuit.”

For the third consecutive year, the factory Honda team consists of the same three players that have, together, produced more race wins and highlights than any other team. Spearheading the trio is three-time 250 Supercross and four-time 250 motocross champion Ricky Carmichael. Carmichael has a record 10 National titles, two of which were gained in 2003 when the young Floridian won back-to-back championships in both the stadium and outdoor motocross series. Earning the Supercross championship proved more difficult than in years past, but in typical Carmichael fashion, when racing headed outdoors he only allowed one other rider to win a moto or race throughout the 11-round National motocross series—and that was fellow Honda rider Kevin Windham. In 2004 Carmichael will make the switch to the four-stroke CRF450R for the outdoor Nationals. Knee surgery performed in December will prevent Carmichael from participating in the Supercross series, but he plans to defend his motocross title and extend his career National championship count to 11 titles.

Since coming to the Honda team in 2002, Ernesto Fonseca’s performance on his #24 CR250R has reflected his talent and determination. Now, with two full years of experience under his belt, the Costa Rican-born rider is more prepared than ever to run at the front of the Supercross and National motocross packs. Although he earned two 125 Supercross titles in 1999 and 2001, last year was a breakthrough year of sorts for Fonseca. He joined Carmichael on the Supercross podium, scoring six consecutive third-place finishes and concluded the season in third place. This year, Fonseca plans to follow no one.

Representing the factory Honda four-stroke contingent is Nathan Ramsey. In 2004 Ramsey tackles a new challenge as he has switched to 125 West Regional Supercross competition aboard the new CRF250R. As the Supercross series heads east, Ramsey will compete in the 250 class aboard the CRF450R, a machine he raced to victory in 2002—the inaugural year for both Ramsey and the powerful new motorcycle as members of the Honda team. In the able hands of this two-time 125 Supercross champion, both the CRF450R and the new CRF250R stand a great chance at victory in 2004.

In addition to the team of Carmichael, Fonseca and Ramsey, Honda continues to provide factory support to the Amsoil-Chaparral Honda team, headed by legendary racers Mike LaRocco and Kevin Windham. Competing in the 250 class, Windham will spearhead the CRF450R effort throughout the year, while LaRocco’s storied career will proceed in the Supercross series only, with occasional appearances in the National motocross series. Representing Factory Connection in the 125 Supercross and motocross ranks are returning team members Travis Preston, Chris Gosselaar, Ryan Mills and new addition Billy Laninovich. Preston and Gosselaar will ride the CRF250R in West Region Supercross action. Meanwhile, Laninovich and Mills will compete in the East Region, with Mills being the team’s sole CR125R rider. Also expect to see Preston at the East Region events competing in the 250 class aboard a CRF450R.

Team MotoXXX returns as a member of the Red Rider racing family for a second consecutive year, now racing the CRF four-stroke line exclusively. MotoXXX pits Kyle Lewis in the 250 class for both Supercross and motocross, while Larry Ward contests 125 West Region Supercross and 125 motocross action. Tim Weigand joins Ward in both classes, and this new team recruit shows great promise. Former 125 Supercross champion Damon Huffman plans to compete only in the 250 Supercross class.
