Here's a tip that goes well with today's theme.

Use light and shadow to isolate your subject and simplify your composition.
.
Want to know the best way to find great light? Go somewhere that someone has already set it up for you. Somewhere like a concert. Stage lighting designers and photographers have the the same goal. Direct the eye of the viewer to what is important.
.
A big part of that job is covering what isn't important. This shot is a great example. Who knows what's on the other side of the piano. A stack of folding chairs? A pile of dirty table clothes? It doesn't matter because it is hidden in the shadows. That's no accident. Whether you backlight and blow out the background or shoot into a relatively dark area like this, the limited dynamic range of your camera is a powerful tool. Try it. Use it. You'll like it. :-). Promise.
