Zina Garrison

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Zina Lynna Garrison, born November 16, 1963, is a former professional tennis player. During her career, she was a women's singles runner-up at #Wimbledon in 1990, a three-time #Grand#Slam mixed doubles champion, and a women's doubles gold medalist and singles bronze medalist at the 1988 #Olympics. At 14, #ZinaGarrison won the national girls' 18s title and in 1981, she won both the Wimbledon and #USOpen junior titles and was ranked number 1 in the World. #ClapForThat!! Unfortunately, Zina began suffering from the eating disorder #Bulimia when she was 19, because she was constantly ridiculed by the tennis community for being “too fat;” giving her a very negative body image. The pressure of being labeled 'the next #AltherGibson’ only made things worse. After leaving tennis, she founded the #ZinaGarrisonFoundation for the Homeless in 1988, and the #Zina Garrison All-Court Tennis Program, which supports inner-city tennis in Houston, in 1992.
