Althea Gibson
Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Althea Gibson, born August 25, 1927, was a professional tennis player and the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title at the #FrenchOpen. The following year she won both #Wimbledon and the U. S. Nationals. In 1958, #AltheaGibson was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the AssociatedPress and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. She was touted as one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived. #ClapForThat!! A little-known fact; Althea was also a professional golfer, who in the early 1960s, became the first black player to compete on the women's professional golf tour. Mrs. Gibson passed away in East Orange, NJ on September 28, 2003.
