Engineer Byron "Barney" Gramling
The younger of the father-son duo that founded the Gramling Locomotive Works of Ashley, IN strikes a pose at the back of the fuel bunker on Flagg Coal Locomotive #75 as he waits for the coaling operation to be completed in the yards of the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston, CT. Barney and his dad John brought this locomotive to the RMNE three times between 2010 and 2012, to pull special passenger excursions in the late spring of each year. The Gramlings have three little tank locomotives and operate a sort of "steam engine for hire" operation, which offers tourist railroads and museums that don't have their own steam program an opportunity to provide steam excursions to their patrons. This particular image was captured during May of 2011 as the locomotive sat under the bridge that carries Connecticut Route 6 over the former New Haven tracks in downtown Thomaston.
