Ely bound
A string of Nevada Northern ore hoppers crosses the fill east of Lackawanna Crossing (MP 139.3), bound for the company's rail yard in East Ely just ahead, with Locomotive #93 on the point. In the background, is part of the 132 mile-long, Schell Creek Mountain Range, which forms the eastern boundary of the Steptoe Valley.
Although the hoppers seen in this view are empty, a northbound train of ore hoppers back in the heyday of the railroad would have been full and would have been headed for the mills at McGill, about 10 miles north of Ely. There, the ore would have been refined into usable copper, as well as other metals for use in industry. Trains hauling empty hoppers toward the East Ely yards would have been coming south out of McGill, generally on the Hiline.
